Most people know roughly what they should do with their money. Spend less than comes in, keep some savings aside, check the pension now and then. The hard part is doing it consistently, alongside everything else life throws up.
Personal finance coaching is support to close that gap. It looks at the whole picture, including money mindset and the behaviours behind spending and saving, sets clear priorities, and provides ongoing accountability so the plan stays on track.
What a coach looks at
A session works from real figures, not rules of thumb. That usually covers:
- income, spending and cashflow
- savings and an emergency fund
- existing pensions and protection, and how they fit together
- gaps and pressure points
- goals, in order of priority
- money mindset, and the habits and behaviours behind spending and saving
- an action plan, with ongoing accountability
Regular check-ins then provide the accountability that turns good intentions into habits that last.
Who it suits
Coaching suits people who feel they should be further ahead, have had a change such as a new job, a separation or a new baby, or simply want a clear picture of where they stand. It suits people who are managing, but want to manage better.
Is it the same as money coaching?
Personal finance coaching is sometimes called money coaching. Many money coaches focus mainly on budgeting and mindset. Personal finance coaching covers those, and also looks at overall financial health, so gaps and pressure points can be spotted and goals worked towards. At Money Saviour it is led by a qualified IFA, so existing arrangements such as pensions are considered as part of that picture.
What it isn't
Coaching isn't regulated financial advice. A coach doesn't recommend or sell products. If regulated advice is needed, for example on investments or a pension transfer, a good coach will say so.
It also isn't debt advice. Anyone struggling with debt can get free, confidential help from MoneyHelper, Citizens Advice or StepChange.
